It’s raining heavily. I’m in town buying chickens as christmas presents for Brenda (my housekeeper) and Moses (the gardener). What the shop owner failed to tell me was that the chickens are alive and very heavy. I bought 3 and carried them in Tesco bags all the way home in the rain (there are no Tesco supermarkets here, so not sure how the bags were supplied) with a little help from Esther, one of the Dutch VSOs. It was surreal. We’ve named one of the chickens Moses, after the gardener. Like Moses, he’s is cheeky, loud and loves being centre of attention. It’s a shame the chickens willsoon be slaughtered and boiled in a pot, but I guess that’s why chickens in Zambia fear Christmas. Poor Moses!
