Today the Chipata Dzithandizeni Nutrition Group was the venue for the‘Under Fives Growth Monitoring Programme’. Every month, women and children from the community gather at the Nutrition centre where a nurse from the neighbouring clinic and also some of the Dzithandizeni Care Givers carry out checks on children under five years old, in order to monitor their development. If there are any cases where children are malnourished and are not developing well, then they are referred to the nearby Health Clinic or in emergencies they are admitted to the General Hospital, where they are given nutritious formula to take and they are subsequently monitored over a 5 day period.A few years ago, the Dzithandizeni Nutrition Group had its own nurse, who monitored the nutritional status of children who had been discharged from the clinic/hospital. Unfortunately, due to lack of funds at my organisation, the nurse was unable to carry out her work and the rehabilitation rooms are now lying empty. Over the next two years, I hope to be able to raise some funds so that we can carryout this essential post treatment service. Here are some photos of the current programme. It was great fun taking some of the photos, as from what I’ve seen of Zambian children, they love having their photo taken! I hope you like!
