In the Gambia there aren’t many plastic bottles - they’re expensive. It is very hot and you sweat and you sweat a lot. I’m drinking about 5 litres a day to break even. So bitiks (tiny shops, usually operated from a hole in people’s garden wall) sell these little 500ml plastic bags of water for 2 Dalasi (4p). Now it’s not great that there’s plastic being used when the tap water is perfectly drinkable but Ican’t help thinking that at least it’s better than a whole plastic bottle. How long before Tesco’s start selling “eco-friendly” corn-starch water packs?Apparently the water in these packs comes from a the tap anyway but then goes through a purifier before being stamped into 500ml bubbles, thrown on the back of a van and distributed around the town. One of the other VSOs lives in the compound that makes the packs so I’m gonna try sneak a video of the machine and stick it on this blog.
