So I'm in Delhi! Arrived last Tuesday along with four other newbie volunteers. We're halfway through our 3 week“In-Country Orientation”, which involves a crash course in Hindi and sessions on Indian culture and VSO's work in India, to prepare us for the year ahead. During free time, I've been seeing the sights of Delhi, chilling and generally enjoying the novelty of being in a strange new country. And eating. I feel right at home as a veggie, it's great. India makes for happy vegetarians. So I'm sampling my way through the chapatis, thalis, samosas and lassis...mm thank you India...stay away Delhi belly..Humuyan's TombDelhi is certainly an interesting city. Our hostel is in New Delhi, the suburbs, with some markets and pretty Lodhi Gardens close by. There is constant noise– fireworks, dogs, noctural weddings, kids, music and mosques. Quite like being back living on Brick Lane actually, without the drunk people. But, in relative terms, actually a kind of sleepy area. I didn't feel I had properly arrived until we visited Old Delhi - into the hectic bombardment of people, rickshaws and general mania. Here's a bumpy glimpse of Old Delhi from the back of a rickshaw:There is a lot to learn about the very different way of life here; and lots to take in, one bit at a time, and one bhaji at a time.
