We did the Southern Circuit of churches today. They are so spectacular! Today was a bit more eventful though as we were joined by a soldier for part of the tour. Mesfin was taking us to one of the churches through the‘road to Heaven’: basically a pitch black very narrow and low walkway upwards through a cave which is meant to be like walking to Heaven. We had been followed round for a while by a soldier but we hadn’t paid much attention to him. Anyways, we enter the walkway with Mesfin leading the way, followed by Pauline, Catherine and me bringing up the rear, or so I thought. We had to walk quite slowly because you couldn’t see a thing and the ceiling was very low and the passage very narrow. As I’m stumbling along I suddenly become aware of a presence behind me...very close behind me. The presence then begins, how can I say this, rubbing himself against me saying ‘kiss, kiss’. I realise it’s the soldier. Not knowing how much English he speaks and knowing he has a large gun and is obviously very strange I try to get the girls attention by saying ‘I think there is someone followingme’. They, obviously confused as to why I’ve suddenly lost my memory- the soldier has been with us for a while, explain patiently, ‘yes Rose, it’s a soldier, he’s been with us for ages.’ Luckily Mesfin realises something is going on and comes back to put himself between me and the soldier, and later asks what exactly happened on the way to Heaven. Pauline has now taught me an Irish phrase that I can say should I ever be in that situation again. So if you ever hear me shouting something that sounds like Simon Cowell , Joanna Lumley it means I’m in a very dark, narrow walkway leading to Heaven being groped by a soldier with a gun who appears to know a few lyrics to a Holly Valance song! This isn't the walkway to Heaven- it's bigger and lighter for a start, but you get the idea!St George's ChurchA bird watching us eat lunch
