The Next Splendid Premonition

The last couple of weeks have been quiet. Though few people celebrated Christmas and New Years, many in the city welcomed the opportunity to stop working, to put their feet up, to relax and enjoy the luxuries of their middle-class existence. City folk are well practised at putting their feet up and enjoying their good fortune. Meanwhile, those in the rural areas have been toiling away in the fields as usual; have been busy cleaning their shacks, washing clothes, making flour and cooking meals. Rural folk too have had much practise in their way of life.My existence of late has combined the luxuries of the wealthy with the chores of the poor. I have enjoyed sitting in the occasional burst of sunshine reading a book and I have endured the difficulties of cutting a sodden lawn with a sickle. Before sitting down to enjoy a nice slice of carrot cake, I have first swept the dried mud and dead cockroaches from the floor. I have surfed the net on my laptop and I have scrubbed my dirty clothes by hand. I have lived like the rich and I have lived like the poor.But, if I were to be truly honest with myself, I must admit that I have led a pretty privileged existence of late. I enjoy tending the garden and though my talents in the kitchen are still extremely limited, I don’t mind preparing my own meals. Cleaning is no hardship either as it’s fun trying to predict which box or piece of furniture the geckos are hiding behind. And after all of this work, when the world is quiet and the chores are done, when the sun sets and the evening draws in, I can sit down and relax in front of my laptop and enjoy a movie.
