Last week I celebrated my 40th birthday in Florence. It is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited. I had been there before when I was 8 years of age, but all I can remember about that visit was complaining to my mum that I didn't want to do any more walking and she ended up carrying me on her shoulders....bless her what a patient mum I had. This latest visit however was entirely different and apart from a couple of painful blisters I thoroughly enjoyed touring the city. It really has to be experienced on foot as most of the centre is closed off to traffic. There are so many awesome sights and views but the famousDuomoliterally took my breath away as we walked into the Piazza. The 400 step climb to the top of theCampanilehas fantastic views of the entire city. Standing on the top looking down upon the city on my actual birthday was one of the best gifts ever. The DuomoOne view from the CampanileI had great company with friends who made the trip extra special. I enjoyed being translator and found theFiorentini(people from Florence) very warm and welcoming. Every restaurant we ate in the staff accommodated to our needs and the food was fantastic. I highly recommendBistecca alla Fiorentinaa huge charcoal-grilled T bone steak.CheersPonte Vecchiomust be one of the most unique bridges in the world lined with gold jewellery shops overhanging the river. It is delightful to view it from a distance.Ponte Vecchio at dusk We also visited Pisa to see the famous leaning tower. Another awesome sight that left me breathless as the white marble appears illuminated against the blue sky. I climbed it in the evening to experience sunset over the city.Leaning tower of PisaI really can say it was a wonderful way to celebrate my birthday with lovely friends and look forward to returning.
