As you leave Cagliari from the West taking the 195 road South towards Pula you will, after approximately fifteen minutes, drive past theStagno di Santo Gillajust before Capoterra. It is a large saline pool and home to a large population of Flamingos. As I go past there I am always in awe as I watch this beautiful birds either standing in the shallow water or taking off serenely in gentle flight. Luckily you can see them all year round and it is even possible to take a walk beside the Stagno. However, it is quite difficult to observe them close up as they nest in the middle of the large pool. I haven't got a good optical zoom on my camera so the photos only catch them from a distance. If you click on the photos and zoom in you might get a slightly better view. It's best to go along with your binoculars of course to watch them close up but just watching them from a distance with the naked eye is inspiring.Flamingos Santa GillaStanding aloneThe path takes you through the pool and with a strong mistral wind, as there was today, it feels like you could be blown into the water!Facing CapoterraIt is so nice to have these wetlands in the midst of an industrialized part of the Island. For me it helps to reconnect to our true essence. When you are surrounded by material man made things or even thinking excessively about all the things you have in your head, a glimpse of an elegant creature such as a flamingo can bring you back to observe the essence of nature and appreciate just how miraculous life truly is, it all just happens on its own without a thought.....
