In praise of crutches.Aren't legs wonderful? From just a few months old we creep on them ,walk, run, skip through life, seldom giving them a second thought.  We walk bare foot, squeeze them into the latest fashions, high heel, low heel, platform or winkle picker, over heat them in trainers or freeze them, they seldom complain. On rare occasions we go too far, that's when we need the crutch. For me at age 60+vat it's my first experience. How lucky can one be to get away scot free for all that time! Initially it's painful, the lazy parts of the body, used to letting the legs do all the work, like the neck, shoulders and arms ache like hell, but they soon pull themselves together and you take off.It must be good for the brain in lots of ways. You have to think of innovative ways of doing simple tasks-have a shower without wetting the cast, make a cup of tea and get it to the table, is that a stairs or mount Everest! We can curse our bad luck or stupidity, which I did in the first few days, but then become realistic. I'll be back on my feet in a few weeks, how many people never walked and never will walk!  Don and I have had unexpected time together, I'm enjoying it and so far he's not complaining and is still spoiling me rotten. Laughter and concern come in equal measure from family and friends. My VA has excelled, not only in doing his own work but mine as well. Volunteer colleagues have been wonderful, The many messages of support, advice, offers of help and the odd giggle are much appreciated. Thank you all.We need times like this to realise who our friends are and appreciate them. Not sure if the real crutches are those metal objects that I hobble around on when not hopping, or the support of family, friends and colleagues who still make life worth living. It's surprising how much work can be done just sitting in front of a laptop or making contact through SKYPE.I think it was John Milton who said' They also serve who only stand and wait'  Patiently making the best of sitting and waiting!
