I'm no Gordon Ramsay but I look sharp in an apron!Last week Allys let slip that I enjoy cooking which, because cooking is not a usual pass time for most Kenyan men, was fascinating to our vocational trainers and self-advocates. As soon as they found out, they all marched up to my desk politely demanding to know when I was going to cook for them. Naturally, I did what any man would do in that situation, and acquiesced immediately.Vocational trainers, Jacqueline and Fayel, helping outI choose to cook a spaghetti bolognese.Carlucciowould not have approved but I knew an 'exotic' European dish would curry favour with my fellow diners, especially because pasta is definitely not the staple food it is back home.Cooking also seemed to get me a pass to the gossip circle, as Jacqueline and Fayellaunched into a diatribe on how useless Kenyan men are at home, and how they are all lazy, apart from Luo men, who can be quite romantic, at least when it suits them.Happy customers! Most people eat with their hands in Kenya, which made spag bol even messier to eat than normalAs you can see by the smiles on their faces everyone was very happy with the result. I'm still not sure if it was the quality of the food or the idea of being cooked for by a man or the idea of being cooked for by a white person, but in any case I was more than happy to indulge them, particularly as I said Allys would cook a quiche the following week!
