Just about to go off on trek for a week into the rural interior of The Gambia to observe trainee teachers. Legends abound about the potential perils of trek, two VSO friends who went recently had the challenge of giant rats dropping onto their beds in the night, and one of them came back with malaria. Hopefully I shall have a peaceful, educational and spiritual week immersed in Gambian culture. More likely I’ll come back knackered, constipated and showing symptoms of scurvy. What do you have to do to get a choice of fresh fruit in this country?!…The photos are of last weekend in Kaur, about 4 hours away from my town. We went to attend the opening of the new compound of one of our students, enabled by some very generous fundraising in Dublin by VSO friend Catherine’s mum. VSO June also helps this same student with speech therapy. As a thank you Catherine and June were bought some material to make clothes, hence the rather jazzy outfits. The print is of a food bowl, a big part of life here where people gather around a communal bowl of food and tuck in. The last photo was of the sexual harrassment policy at the local school. UK secondary schools could benefit from a similar set of rules although, granted, it’s normally a little on the cold side to expose your breasts in the UK. Chapel coat pegs spring to mind….
