Not far from where I live and on the way to Cagliari lies a very pretty residential area calledPoggio Dei Pini. The houses are built sparsely around a lake and vast amounts of pine trees. As you drive into Poggio you go up a gradual incline into the mountains. I went dog walking up in the area today with a friend who lives there. I thought I'd share some views of the area as you walk up into the hilly countryside as it's really beautiful.Looking South East towards CagliariOverlooking some of the residential areaWalking North into the mountainsAs you drive South from Cagliari towards Pula you have to pass Poggio dei Pini yet all the houses are laid back inland and sweetly hidden by the lush nature. In October 2008 the area was badly hit by torrential rain and people's homes were flooded and unfortunately a few people lost their lives. I remember it well as all the rain washed down onto the main road, the SS195, which connects to Cagliari. Several cars were washed into the sea. I was actually due to drive that morning to teach at the airport, (I was teaching on a course for the staff at Cagliari airport,) and couldn't get in for a few days as part of the road was washed away.Strangely enough, two days ago we had torrential rain and thundery storms over our way. Many homes in Pula and Villa San Pietro got their underground garages flooded. The rain came down heavily and continuously for about two hours and we worked out that was about 170mm of rain in that short period. I took a couple of photos from our front veranda to try and capture the depth of water. Luckily we didn't get flooded but the garden got a very good watering that day. We had very loud thunder and lightening straight above the house.Lots of rain and wind!Torrential rain
