Really not impressed with Harper's pro-Israel comments that were run today (http://www.straight.com/news/684876/prime-minister-stephen-harper-issues-statement-supporting-israels-right-defend-itself). Then again, what has Harper done to impress me. . .ever?Bombing and killing people are horrible and evil--that goes for both sides. However, when power and resources are stacked so dramatically on one side, along with the oppressive, prejudicial and entitled attitudes/policies that come along with it, it is foolish to refer to only one side, especially the disadvantaged side, as"terrorists".As human beings, if we look into the situation at all past FOX, Sun Media and other mainstream media sources, we understand the plight of Palestinians regardless of religion or beliefs that may differ from our own. If Palestinians are terrorists, they are terrorists out of necessity. Life has become so unlivable that the impossibly slim chance of winning a sliver of autonomy against such a powerful authority is better than continuing as things are.In the words of Haruki Murakami:“If there is a hard, high wall and an egg that breaks against it, no matter how right the wall or how wrong the egg, I will stand on the side of the egg. Why? Because each of us is an egg, a unique soul enclosed in a fragile egg. Each of us is confronting a high wall. The high wall is the system which forces us to do the things we would not ordinarily see fit to do as individuals . . . We are all human beings, individuals, fragile eggs. We have no hope against the wall: it's too high, too dark, too cold. To fight the wall, we must join our souls together for warmth, strength. We must not let the system control us -- create who we are. It is we who created the system. (Jerusalem Prize acceptance speech, JERUSALEM POST, Feb. 15, 2009)”
