After watching the goal ball championships on Saturday morning, we went toStorymoja Hay Festival, a 3-day celebration that provided‘opportunities for the meeting of minds and sharing of ideas between storytellers and the public.’Our afternoon at Story Moja took both a serious and a light tone. Serious, as we walked through an exhibit which showed gruesome and heartbreaking photography of events which took place during post-election violence in early late 2007 / early 2008. And light, when we sipped Tuskers while watching talented young Kenyans compete in storytelling competitions. To be honest, storytelling competitions didn’t sound like that much fun to me when I read about them in the program – however it was incredible! The 20 young finalists incorporated music, songs, acting and jokes into their performances – and since the 1st prize was an all expense paid trip to the UK, the competition was steep. The storytelling was followed by an outdoor concert, where we ran into some friends and watched traditional dancers and singers as the sun set.To end the evening, a big group of us was invited to the posh area of Karen where we sat around a campfire, relaxing on big pillows or in the hammock, and snacking on cheese fondue and roasted bananas with chocolate telling stories of our own.Random fun days are often the best of all.
