Volunteering. The views expressed in this blog are the author's own and do not reflect those of VSOLooking back over my blog of the past few months, one could be forgiven for thinking that volunteers (and especially me) spend their time holidaying in exotic places. While I can’t deny that there are numerous holidays and we make the best of our free time and the low cost of travel in Asia, most of us work very hard between breaks. Schools are open 6 days a week. We are only obliged to work 5, but there is very little to do in Sisophon, except work and sleep and with so much needing to be done in schools I feel guilty wasting time doing nothing. When I’m here I usually work Saturdays. Working hours are 7am to 5 pm, with a 2 hour lunch break. The rainy season is here again, after a couple of hours rain the roads become mud tracks. We slide along, arriving at school in squelching footwear. A student could find lots of plausible excuses here for not having homework done.’ The dog ate my homework’ might not work, but’ the gecko or mice ate it’ might, or better still, a kid would surely get away with‘it fell out of my bag and sank in the mud’. Any teacher would be glad it was left there. So you see it’s not all fun and games.
