On Saturday, our neighbours had a baby shower for their 5 month old daughter, who my roommate and I just adore. When I think of a baby shower, I envision a bunch of women sitting around and eating cake, while watching a prospective mom open presents making lots of“oohhh”, “aaaahhhh” and “isn’t that sweet?” noises. While I enjoy baby showers at home, the Kenya baby shower is so much more fun! It takes place months after the baby is born and all family and friends are invited. The baby is passed around and given presents, while guests enjoy music, dancing and lots of nyama choma (roasted meat), drinks and snacks. The party yesterday started at 2 pm and was still going when I went to bed at around 11 pm!(I went into the kitchen to get something in the middle of the afternoon and look what I saw: goat, waiting to be roasted, but somehow looking like a decoration in the meantime!)
