Just about my favourite advert in The Gambia. As if it’s not enough that Arnold from ‘Diff'rent Strokes’ appears to have been promoted to Captain of the plane, it’s also obvious that 'share our passion’ refers to a love of playing chicken between the two pilots as neither one is looking where the plane is going. I dream of climbing a ladder and painting Everest looming up in the cockpit window…a subtle headline in one of the daily rags. Aaahhh, almost makes me miss the Daily Mail. Of course, if you use inverted commas then that’s alright…I’ve linked my school in the UK with a school out here, so the Year 5 kids in the UK sent out information brochures about themselves, and the Gambian kids will reply in a similar fashion…a friend of my dad very kindly bought and sent out some bibs for the local football club here, coached by my neighbour Mr Touray…the strange apple-looking fruits, as if you didn’t know, are cashews. Each fruit bears one nut (no wonder they’re so bloody expensive) which is roasted to remove the outer skin. The fleshy fruit is full of liquid so they are bashed up, the liquid is filtered and heated up, and the result is cashew liquor which is sold to the local christians! It’s absolute gut-rotand smells like something B&Q would flog for stripping down tough paint work…
