My lovely VSO neighbour and colleague June and I were‘honoured’ guests at the Gambia College inter-class football finals last week. After lugging our own chairs down to the touchline we walked down the line-up of both teams and shook hands with all the players, wishing them luck and a clean game. The clean part is unlikely as the football field isactually a large area of sandy land with goals at either end so as soon as the ball is kicked and everyone sprints after it the whole game is mostly played in a cloud of sandy dust. But the players were enthusiastic, the watching crowd were in good voice and June and I did our own Diamond Jubilee tribute by graciously awarding the trophies in the style of Liz and Phil.
