We are coming up to the mid autumn festival which falls on the 15th of the 8th lunar month. It is also known as Mooncake Festival because this is what is traditionally eaten on this day. For the last month Mooncakes have been on sale in abundance. They are usually given as gifts to friends and family. The above photo shows a box that I was given by some friends. The cakes are quite heavy with a dense filling surrounded by a thin crust pastry. You can find sweet cakes, for example with a bean paste filling, or savoury types, for example with with ham or egg yolk filling. To be honest when I have eaten them I have struggled to define what the filling is made from, I think there are so many different varieties. This festival is one of the biggest in China. I am discovering that everyone wants to travel this time of year. I have had to change my travel plans because I cannot book any accommodation where I wanted to go, or when I can, it is triple the price! So I will not be headingto Shangri-la, that will have to be for another time. I am in the process of making other plans....
