Setting the stage: This story happened to my friend Rosemary and her friends in Mombasa, a coastal city where the pace of life is much slower and arrowroots (starchy vegetables similar to sweet potatos) are much cheaper more plentiful than in Nairobi. While they were visiting Mombasa, Rosemary's friend approached an old man who had a tarp spread out on the ground covered with arrowroots for sale. Presumably, every day this old man wakes up, spreads his tarp out on the ground, arranges the arrowroots and just waits all day for customers. Her friend asked the old man how much it would cost to buy all of his arrowroots and the old man said“I can’t sell you them all!” and bluntly refused. Her friend asked why not, and he replied:“But if I sell you all of my arrowroots today, what will I do tomorrow?” :-)
