Last Friday was the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Kenya Union of the Blind and oh what a event it was!It took place at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi and we had more than 500 guests including Kenya’s Minister for Gender, Children and Social Development, several high profile persons from development agencies, partners and corporates, and hundreds of visually impaired members. The event also had exhibits by about 20 of our partner organizations who support persons with visual impairments. Wehad an unbelievable press turnout and achieved our goal of raising awareness of issues faced by visually impaired persons, as well as what they are capable of when given the opportunity. We tried our best to make the event fun, with entertainment by an up-and-coming group of visually impaired persons called the Savannah Maestros, the choir from Thika High School for the Blind, KUB’s youth leadership team from Kenyatta University and the KUB choir accompanied by an accordion player. Despite several last minute changes to the programme and starting unbelievably late (not abnormal for events here) it was a great success and the members went away happy and proud of the organization to which they belong.I’ve lived and dreamed this event for months and especially the past week where my colleague Leah and I have been working 16+ hour days, so I almost don’t know what to do with myself now that it’s over.
