The'foreign' teachers were taken out for dinner by the foreign affairs department in the college this evening, I think because it's Christmas week. Christmas is not really celebrated in China and Christmas day is a normal working day. Although, many of the shops around Simao have put up Christmas trees and the staff in the local supermarkets have been wearing their Santa hats and playing Christmas songs. We were taken to a fish hotpot restaurant. On each table there is a large bowl where the broth is cooked and then the raw fish added where it cooks very quickly and the heat is controlled by a gas burner under the table. Lots of vegetables are added and everyone then dips into it and takes their bit. It was really delicious and the first time I have had hotpot in Simao. I have eaten it in other cities and the style always seems to be slightly different. I was impressed with the Simaoan version!
