I've just spent a week in Cameroon's capital, Yaoude. We've been having in country training at VSO Cameroon, and have been very well looked after. My only complaint is the lack of vegetarian food- after three days of fried plantains and bread I ended thirteen years of vegetarianism and ate a fish. Apparently this is good training for the Far North, where sometimes you eat meat, you eat fish, or you eat nothing. There are also a lot of very deep holes in the pavement. One of our group fell into one and sprained his ankle, although fortunately the junior Cameroonian football team were staying at our hotel, and so the national team pysiotherapist was on hand to help. Now, although we'd all love to be looking around, we have been walking through Yaoude with our eyes on the ground.I'm heading off for the Far North this afternoon- we were lucky to get spaces on the train as the track was closed after a derailment last week (this is very normal), and the trains are packed at the moment as everyone is trying to get to school, or college, or to Yaounde to take a plane to Mecca before the end of Ramadan in a couple of weeks. It's advisable to take the train for the first length of the journey, as it's the best way to avoid bandits, although it's also important to keep possessions away from the windows, as pickpockets will sit on the train roof!
