Last July,I blogged about the severe droughtand water shortages which were having a devastating effect on Kenya’s land and its citizens. It resulted in electricity shortages (in Nairobi we had 3 days per week without power for a few months), sanitation issues (including the rapid spread of cholera, especially in slums and rural areas) and the death of livestock due to dehydration and starvation, not to mention the severe environmental damage it caused. Now, the opposite seems to be happening in many parts of the country. El Niño and the associated rains have wreaked havoc in many areas of Kenya. The rains have caused flooding in more than 15 districts, destroying hundreds of homes, destroying crops and requiring the evacuation of thousands to higher grounds. So far, at least 30 deaths have been blamed on the flooding.(1)It seems to be an all or nothing game here when it comes to the rains lately in Kenya.(1) Daily Nation, Pg. 3, Mon Jan 11, 2009“Storms kill seven and leave a trail of destruction”
