The proposed new Constitution for Kenya will go to a national referendum on August 4, 2010. Some people have questioned whether this will lead to more violence in this country, after the 2007/8 post election violence left more than 1,300 people dead and 300,000 people displaced. Although fairly significant measures have been put in place to encourage peace, the campaigning is off to a rough start.Yesterday evening in Uhuru* park in Nairobi, during a gathering for the“No” campaign (those campaigning against the new Constitution) 2 explosions, about 15 minutes apart, took place amongst the crowd of thousands. Five people have been confirmed dead and at least another 75 have been injured. There are many speculations as to who is responsible for the attacks, ranging from the 'Yes' campaigners to those from within, and we may never know who is responsible. Leaders are publicly calling for peace in hopes of curtailing any retaliatory attacks. With another 6 weeks to go before the referendum, we can only hope that this is not a sign of what what is to come.*Ironically uhuru means "freedom" in Swahili
