Wherever I go in the world, I somehow end up blessed with wonderful friends and Kenya is no exception. I recently celebrated my birthday and it was truly a day that I will never forget! The day started atWestGate Shopping Mallwhere my flat mate and I enjoyed a cappuccino, while listening to a talk on fashion for the‘winter’ season here. I can’t say much about the presentation itself, but we ran into my good friend Carol which was a wonderful surprise! I then proceeded to the day spa for a pedicure, a gift from one of my girlfriends here. While my feet were being soaked, massaged and preened, I read 3magazines (an extra treat as the magazines cost a full day’s VSO allowance) while having my back massaged in the luxurious leather chair. I left the salon with pretty red toe nails to meet my flat mate for lunch at our favourite restaurant,Artcaffé, and was surprised to find my best Kenyan friend waiting for me there too! A Caesar salad and tree tomato juice and lots of laughs later, my flat mate and I hoppedinto a car and made our way out to the renownedGiraffe Manorfor high tea– another gift.As we pulled into the Giraffe Manor, the manager greeted us in the parking lot and quickly ushered us around to the back patio, as a full grown giraffe was on the front lawn looking for food! (Their kicks can be deadly if you get in their way!)I was wished happy birthday by the staff and we were treated to champagne as a special birthday present! :-) We spent some time around the back feeding the giraffe and sipping champagne while they prepared our tea, then went out to the front lawn where a beautiful tray of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies, almond cookies, carrot cake, apple crumble cake, egg and cucumber/cream cheese sandwich wedges awaited us, along with a fresh pot of tea. We fedthe giraffes and several loitering wart hogs and had to run inside the house several times as one bold female giraffe was determined to make her way back up onto the lawn! After a couple of hours at the Manor, we went to the Junction shopping centre where a whole bunch of my girlfriends awaited us. I popped intoKazuribeads (my favourite store!) to buy a new purse with a gift certificateI received for my birthday, then we all enjoyed the newSex and the City 2 movie! It was a wonderful day and made me so grateful for all of my friends, from all aroundthe world.
