Just a quick post to put up some photos of the RED office where I work. I’m working on a collection of random photos of Janjanbureh the town and of some of the people I live/work with, and I’ll post them fairly soon, I hope.Even though I’ve seen very few other Ministry of Education offices, I’d bet good money that none of them are more modern or comfortable than RED5. There’s been a lot of work put into it recently, and the construction is still ongoing. The big building on the left is RED5’s conference hall, used for courses or big meetings. Just behind that is an under-construction dining hall, and behind that is what Alhaji, who’s masterminding all the building work, refers to as the “executive dining hall”. The dining halls are there for paying guests who stay in the accommodation block which you can see at the back of the compound. The idea is that the money from the accommodation is channelled into keeping the office compound in good nick, and if there’s any left over it gets given to the schools. Alhaji’s also applied for a grant to start up a vegetable gardenand an area to keep livestock, which would supply the kitchen. The buildings on the left are staff accommodation, and the ones that you can just see under the tree are the Director’s office (on the left) and, on the right, the office for everyone else, including yours truly. Which, from the other end, looks something like this:And finally, we have Alhaji in his latest project, the still-to-be-completed dining hall. Just a week or so ago, the ground where he's standing was simply bare earth, and it'll probably be finished in the next few days. When Gambians put up buildings, they do sofast.
