George was able to take a couple of days off this week to head out of town with Dianne. Kingston's not exactly a trendy vacation destination, especially right now. On Wednesday night we ran into a police road block on our way home from supper in Port Royal so getting out of town was a special treat. We'd been able to make a reservation at Ital Rest, a rasta guest house with no electricity...just candle lit. It's lovely and no wonder it's in Lonely Planet.Frankie our host at Ital Rest.We stayed in the bottom unit of this hut.George cutting up paw paws in the kitchen which we shared with the other guest, Gary, a teacher on sabbatical from New Jersey.Ital Rest Guest House has its own private beach and we were the only people on it the whole time we were there.Playing in the waves. We enjoyed breakfast overlooking the beach at Frenchman's Cove, followed by a morning swim.A goat herder in Treasure Beach. And no trip to Treasure Beach is complete without a visit to Jakes above and Callaloo below for great gifts. Dianne bought some souvenirs and George and I bought what we hope will become a Christmas present. Buying this early seems a bit dubious - hopefully it won't get used for something else in the meantime. And into every life a little rain must fall. That's right, as we were driving into Ital Rest we ended up taking the back road in and the car went bump into a pot hole. The hole was so deep the car actually stopped in it's tracks. We didn't realize we had done any damage until later in the day when we went out for supper and heard a noise coming from the front wheel a bit like a twig caught between the tire and the wheel well. As we drove towards the nearest gas station, a kind man stopped us and tied the bumper back onto the car so that we were OK to drive for the rest of the weekend. It's not flapping too badly now. Well, a bit maybe flapping again, but only when we drive around tight corners too fast. It's an excellent conversation starter and useful to warding off vendors as we say we can't afford anything because we need to fix our car. They take one look at our bumper and feel sorry for us!
