We headed out for a walk around the grounds of the University of West Indies, Mona Campus, because we'd been told about the ruins and remains of an old aqueduct on the premises adding interest and beauty to the campus which was originally a sugar plantation. It wasn't until we started our walk that I realized we were wearing the same clothes. Pinkish purply shirts and black shorts. We even had matching black umbrellas, only mine was bigger! We've obviously been married too long. So do all those other couples you see walking about in matching jackets and sweaters deliberately dress like that or is it just a coincidence? We soon felt better...we weren't the only people walking about dressed alike. This couple were the only other people we saw walking around, but we did see students reading and eating in gazebos scattered around campus. One of the intriguing things about Jamaica is its concern about people driving the wrong way on a one way street. There is a ring road on campus that basically links most of the buildings. An excellent design. But at every stop sign there is one of these sabre tooth tire shredders. I suspect they've got much bigger ones at the US Embassy, they certainly do in Ottawa, but these are deadly looking and just to keep traffic flowing in the same direction - I'm sure it works!Without too much effort, we found the old aqueduct and the ruins beside the hospital as directed by the security guard. The university buildings are a blend of modern buildings, both old and new. Some built at times when the university had more money and are therefore attractive. Others built solely to fulfil a function. Two buildings we saw had interesting murals along one wall. This one below is on the side of the Faculty of Law building. In one area of Mona they incorporated the aqueduct ruins into the landscaping. This repaired section runs along the road towards the exit and frames the building below as would a wall.It was a very pleasant walk in the rain on a Sunday afternoon.
