Last Friday, three VSO volunteers and a few of our foreign friends signed-up for a quiz night competition, sponsored by Marketing Africa. It took place at a very popular restaurant bar called Carnivore. In addition to being a good networking opportunity, we were also convinced we had a genuine shot at the grand prize of Ksh 60,000 (about Cdn $1000)! It was a large event with about 300 people and the emcee welcomed our visibly all white table right away, announcing to the group that clearly we weren't there for the money. :-) (Little did he know that as volunteers we were among those earning the least in the room of Marketing professionals, but there was no point in pointing that out.)Categories included Brands, World of Sports, Music, Movies, Voices, and Famous Faces. Our excitement grew at the event launch when they basically announced that there were no rules, other than the fact that each team was only allowed 6 players, and that you could use all tools at your disposal. Our team purely by coincidence had both an iPhone and a laptop with wireless modem connectivity! (Feel our excitement growing...)Then, he started shooting out the 65+questions at warp speed. Very quickly we found ourselves cursing under our breath as we frantically tried to keep up with the questions and search online for everything from famous Kenyans to worldwide brands. By the time we got to the final category, at least half of our table had given up and resorted to having paper airplane fights, while the other half were still convinced that by nature of a bell curve we might have a shot. ... until we looked at our almost completely empty response sheet and compared it to that of the Kenyan table next to us who were only missing a few answers. Then the rest of us gave up and ordered a drink instead too.So we're still broke ... and very humbled. :-)
