Tonight we wanted to watch the movie Knight and Day with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz but when we arrived at the mall an hour early to buy our advance tickets as usual, we found the movie sold out.The whole mall was packed with young people on the first Saturday night of the summer holidays and the only thing open in the mall at night is the movie theatre and the food court. For Canadians this will look like any Saturday afternoon at the mall, but for the Sovereign Mall, this is a huge crowd - a Saturday night gathering place. But tonight, the first day of summer for all students the mall seemed to attract an even greater and excited crowd.During the day, in comparison, this mall is very quiet with most shoppers heading directly to either the grocery store or Digicel (the local cell phone store) and the only people hanging around are one or two taxi drivers looking for fares calling out Half Way Tree, Half Way Tree, as I pass. Half Way Tree is the bus terminal where all the route taxis want to end up.George described the mood at the mall this evening as good natured and robust. I certainly found it fun although I'm not sure why they were all there other than just to hang out in traditional Jamaican Saturday night style ...there certainly isn't room in the two smallish theatres or the food court for them all.At night, especially Saturday night when all the shops are closed, the mall comes to life.
