This month, the Kenya Union of the Blind opened a brand new technology resource centre for visually impaired youth. The centre is sponsored by GTZ (German's international development agency) and is the first of its kind in Kenya.Last week, our trainers had invited 6 visually impaired youth to be trained on computers using assistive technology software, however the morning of the training more than 20 of them showed up!Very simply put, assistive technology software allows text to be converted to audio files for blind persons and converted to large print for partially sighted persons. Two popular programs include JAWS and Sightsavers Dolphin Pens. JAWS needs to be pre-installed each computer. Sightsavers' Dolphin Pens, however, simply look like USB keys and work automatically when plugged into any computer. With more than 80% of information being acquired visually, the software helps to somewhat level the playing field for visually impaired persons. It is truly amazing to see how this technology has empowered blind persons and opened up a world of information to them - allowing them to access the internet, e-mails and develop useful job skills including Microsoft Office.Another very inspiring and motivating project at the Kenya Union of the Blind.
