On our trip to the Coast over the Easter holidays, Richelle and I travelled with 9 Kenyans.Despite the fact that we've now been here 6 months, occasionally we forget that the sense of time in Africa is quite different than that at home. On our first night out in Mombasa, for example, we were told to wait downstairs at the hotel at 6:30 pm to go out to dinner. As good Canadians, with time consciousness deeply instilled in us since childhood, we were there on time. ... and we waited ...and waited ...and waited in the humid heat until finally the last of the group arrived a full two hours later. So we learned and figured "if you can't beat 'em join 'em!" For the rest of the trip we made it our mission to be among the last to arrive and succeeded. When we got teased we explained that we were just trying to adapt culturally and jokingly got told "C'mon... even you girls are overdoing it!" and were affectionately called "White Africans" from then on.
