As the Dispute Resolution Foundation (DRF) prepares for hurricane season, it has come to light that the newer staff members are not happy with the building. It leaks a lot when it rains and the newer employees are worried the old gun court won't hold up in a hurricane. The older staff remind them that this building has survived Hurricane Gilbert, Hurricane Ivan and all the other big ones in the past. But as George pointed out to me there haven't been any major hurricanes in Jamaica in a few years and the building has deteriorated a bit over time so DRF is in fact looking at moving to an empty service station down the road. It must be a reasonable sized building to fit 30 people although an empty old gas station doesn't sound like prime real estate. But perhaps any building is better than the current one. George says the leak over his desk has occurred on days when there has been no rain at all, so there is probably water sitting up there above the ceiling like a time bomb waiting to explode.DRF has doubled in size in the last year and now for the month of July there are an additional 9 high school graduate students on staff creating a severe shortage of space under the leaking roof. In the afternoon you hardly ever see people at their morning desks. It's a bit like musical chairs. If you are looking for a specific person you often find that person is in the mediation room with a client and someone else will be sitting at their desk because there aren't enough to go around. There are a few wooden benches scattered about where clients normally wait for their hearings to start. George said it wasn't unusual to see a person waiting on the bench for their hearing at 9:00 am and still be sitting there are 4:00 pm. He believes these people are now waiting in the covered patio at the back of the building because the summer students are using the benches as work space.George will be taking photos during the course of the day...so come back later this evening to see what he photographed.
