I got pick-pocketed again on Friday in town just before dark while waiting for a matatu. I was making a considerable effort to hold onto my bag tightly with the zipper on the front (as the area that I was in is notorious in the early evening for pickpocketing) but for a moment when I was distracted someone opened the zipper and pulled out my money pouch without my noticing.A few good lessons:- Always keep a small amount of money in your pocket as a back-up. Luckily I had and had just enough for my matatu fare to Westlands. Otherwise, I could have been in a pretty bad situation.- Never keep your money pouch in an outside pocket. I now have a hand-made contraption that fastens my outside pocket zipper to the main zipper of my bag, keeping it closed.- My strategy to buy a really really cheap cell phone may have paid off, as the thief didn't even bother with it! (That part made me laugh a bit, even if it was just coincidence.)
