My thoughts over the past few days have been with everyone in Maga and Pouss, the two villages where I’ve been working in Cameroon.Pouss has been hit by a terrible rainstormwhich has killed at least nine people (and there are many others who have disappeared) and destroyed the houses of 3000 others. It has also destroyed much of the millet crop, which was almost ready to be harvested. People who were out in the fields when the storm hit were particularly vulnerable.I’ve been struggling to get through to people on the telephone, as the phone signal is very bad. Those who I’ve spoken to have confirmed that the storm was terrible, and my boss the Inspector has lost a relative, but they also had positive stories to tell about people pulling together to help each other. The Governor of the province and the local Red Cross have been co-ordinating the relief effort, but at this time of year the roads to Pouss will be flooded out and it will be very hard to get any resources into the area. Meanwhile families who have lost their homes are staying in the primary school and the lycee at Pouss.
