(Written 29/07/2010 17:30, My House, Janjanbureh)I was warned many times that nothing much happens in the office over the summer holidays, but hearing the words and experiencing the reality are two entirely different things. The reality is that, out of a staff of fifteen, precisely six were in work today, and of those in the building, at most one was actually working. The only reason I have anything to do is that several outside entities– the Governor’s Office, GAMSPAD, two of JJB’s schools, a couple of individuals – have simultaneously asked me for computer-related assistance. The problem I’m finding though is that the atmosphere is so soporific that it’s hard to get motivated to do anything at all! I’m sure most ofyou reading will know what it’s like to spend day after day in a dull office scratching around for things to do; to the fortunate few who don’t, I’ll just say that it’s pretty soul-deadening.It’s hard to know when things will pick up. At some point the Director will have to come back to tie up loose ends, pack up his house and hand over the Directorate to his successor, whoever that turns out to be, and the Director usually creates plenty of work for his subordinates (and also, as in most places, there’s a mysterious increase in productivity whenever the boss is around...). Until that happens though, it’s going to be slow, slow, slow. I’ll probably head for Kombos the weekend after next and spend a few days down there, and then see what’s happened in my absence. Somethingusually goes wrong whenever I go away! By the time I get back there’ll only be a week or so until postings are announced, so I expect there’ll be some frantic, last minute rushing to get those finished, which’ll let me make myself useful in some way.But for now... dead, dead, dead. Never mind; nearly the weekend, right?
