We're off to watch Eat, Pray, Love tonight even though it's only rated two stars and the reports are in that Julia Roberts' acting skills are not up to Academy standard. From the trailers, the travel scenes look amazing and I love the idea the author actually took a year off from life and indulged in herself, well she wrote and published a book to pay for her experience. Maybe I should get advertising for this blog to help pay for our adventure in Jamaica since no one will ever pay me to publish it!Movies in Jamaica are interesting. The theatres themselves are small. There are two in the complex across the street from us. We saw Eat, Pray, Love on opening night in a theatre that seats 112 which means 7 rows of seats. Pretty small. And most movies only last one week so if you want to see a particular movie you have to watch for it carefully and buy your tickets in advance. Movies sell out quickly. The movies all start with the national anthem where you have to politely stand while it's playing. Unfortunately it's only an instrumental version so I'm not learning the words as fast as I could. I do know the chorus (Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica land we love), that's pretty simple and I learned it the first time I heard it. The video that goes with it is like any typical travel clip worth its salt - it makes everyone in the audience proud to be in Jamaica. The other interesting thing about movies here is that there is always an intermission so you can go to the bathroom or buy more popcorn half way through. They try to stop the movie at a logical spot but I still find the interruption totally annoying. Once I return to Canada I'll probably miss not having a mid-movie break. I know, you can't win but I do appreciate the fact we don't have to sit and watch half an hour of movie star gossip quizzes, sometimes with the sound turned off, other times cranked up too loud. Oh and I forgot about the sturdy plastic lap trays they provide for your complete hotdog, taco chip, popcorn and drink meal. Next time I go to the movies, I'm going to have my supper at the theatre and get one of those trays full of food. This weekend we're off to a drumming for peace event on the north shore.
