Today I took my first drive with a Government 4x4 Car to visit two schools further out of Katima. It was really enjoyable, driving alone into‘the bush’ and seeing more isolated schools. Despite visiting both, but only managing to formally observe the two teachers at one of the schools, it still felt like a really successful day. It was so much fun being responsible for this big car and finding my way to be greeted warmly. The children are delightful here on the whole, but more adorable the further out you get from the cities/towns. The little ones get so excited and will jump up and down from excitement just for being greeted by me (a ‘makuwa’). They are always watching you and what you do, especially when I sit in the classes observing, they keep checking over with their gorgeous big brown eyes to see what I’m doing and get very excited if I work with them. The younger they are, the higher the excitement levels. I much prefer this to staying in Katima and only working with the town schools. I’m hoping to make themost of the GRN car while I have access to it. It was such as a surprise as the other volunteers kept telling me that it is highly unlikely I will ever get one, so I almost couldn’t believe my eyes when it got signed off to me for a whole month when I just asked for a few days. It will be used bymany in the ministry during this time, so it’s not all mine. I can only use it during office hours and for work purposes only, but as petrol is paid for, it is a great luxury that allows me to enjoy the job here so much more.
