God grant me the serenityTo accept the things I cannot change,Courage to change the things I can,and wisdom to know the difference.During my time in Kenya I accomplished many things both professionally and personally that I never dreamed of, whereas other things which I was certain I would have influenced remain relatively unchanged. When I was discussing this with a very wise friend, I was reminded of the prayer above. I was also reminded that in a year I will probably look back fondly on all of the good memories while most of the bad ones will be nearly erased from my mind (a coping mechanism that we all use)… and truthfully any ‘bad’ memories are already quickly fading away. Living and working in a different culture comes with many challenges– some things can (and should) be altered, while others cannot (and in some cases perhaps should not). My two years as a VSO volunteer in Kenya has affected the way I will look at many different aspects of life, as well as the way I react to different situations. I’m grateful for all of the experiences I have had (no matter how good or bad they seemed at the time), for the friends from all over the world that I’ve made and for the new perspectives that I have gained, as I know these will serve me well throughout my life, both personally and professionally. Although the next two years are going to be drastically different than the previous two years, I’m excited for the new adventures that await me. Thanks to all my friends and family for sharing in this journey and for your friendship and encouragement throughout.
