Robert assured us beforehand that his friend, Ruth-Claire, was special. I remember him confidently saying at Spanish class, "you'll see". Man, was he right.Ruth-Claire is a tiny ball of fire from Long Island who arrived with fluffy white hair and in less than a week was sporting sophisticated cornrows with extensions and shell beads. She came prepared, she bought the beads and extensions in New York but found an excellent hairdresser here to put it all together. There's a lot more to Ruth-Claire than hair, but if you haven't figured it out by now, I love funky hair.Robert and Ruth-Claire met when she lived in Montreal. She'd been in a serious car accident leaving her legally blind; Robert was her lawyer. But nothing has stopped Ruth-Claire, she continues to work as a sand therapist many years later, has travelled extensively and knows everything about everything. She knows more about Canada than we do. She even told me that it was possible for me to live on the Toronto Island, that there really is an alternative to waiting to win the lottery to have your name on the list and then moving to the top of the list which will take 35 years. Since I'd be 95 at the earliest if I won the lottery and actually got my name on the list, I stopped submitting my name and gave up that dream several years ago.Ruth-Claire told me about a seniors residence on the Toronto Island and gave me the name of the person to contact. Now how is it that I'm hearing about this from an American in Jamaica when my own brother-in-law's twin brother lives on the island? As I said, she knows everything and my brother-in-law probably never knew about my obsession about wanting to live on the island and hopefully he doesn't think of me as a senior since he's a year older than I am.Ruth-Claire has now postponed her return flight for a few days so that she can help a friend in need here in Jamaica. A very special person indeed who at one point said she was considering signing up with CUSO-VSO.
