A visit to Chiang Mai.Friday 24th. September was Constitution Day in Cambodia, giving me a long weekend to take a short break in Thailand. I flew from Bangkok to Chiang Mai where I met up with Don. We had a very enjoyable few days in Thailand’s second city.Situated in the northern hilly part of the country Chiang Mai does not compare with Bangkok in size or development, it feels more like a small provincial town. We enjoyed a walk through the colourful night market, and found some excellent vegetarian restaurants. On Saturday we took a trip up to the famous Wat Doi Suthep Temple. This temple is impressive and the view from it over the city is spectacular, There were groups of local children in costume, taking turns to dance in honour of Buddha, and many pilgrims praying and making offerings of flowers, fruit, candles and incense.                       On the way back we took a short detour to see one of the area’s many waterfalls. There are jungle treks, elephant sanctuaries, white water rafting and tribal villages no more than an hour away from Chiang Mai, all waiting to be explored on the next trip!     Only a 60 minute flight or an overnight train journey from bangkok, Chiang Mai is well worth a visit.
