Opening of the school year.Today 1st. October was the first day of the new school year. I was invited to attend the ceremony at Koak Lun Primary School, along with the Community Leader and the parents of children who were to receive prizes for achievement in the last school year. We arrived at 7.15 am. Welcome Speech Invited ParentsA huge banner was erected and the playground set up with speakers, tables and chairs. A very long letter was read out from the Ministry of Education, detailing the wonderful progress being made in education in Cambodia. Prize giving . Staff of Koak Lun.Teachers made a promise to work hard. Each invited guest made a speech. Finally the prizes were presented to the children. It was all over by 9.am and everyone went home.Me with Village Leader, her husband and school staff.This was the first day at school for about 25 children. Not one of them was accompanied by a parent. They took their places in the front rows and sat quietly for the duration. One little boy fell asleep, there were a few sad little faces, but no fuss and no tears.
