As I mentioned in our Thanksgiving posting, the flash flooding continues as Tropical Storm Nicole passes through. Here are some photos taken by Coniel Cain, a Gleaner reporter and photographer over the weekend in Papine, an area within walking distance for George and I. The flooded roads in Papine are what made us late for Thanksgiving dinner. Our taxi driver got held up there and had to backtrack and take alternate roads.Landslides like this are common, especially in the mountains, making roads impassable along with the flooding. In the picture below you can see the guy ropes holding the house steady against the flooding and from being washed away. This was obviously a church until last weekend. With the long weekend ahead to celebrate Heroes Day, George and I have reservations in Negril which means taking the Fern Gully route. However I suspect after 3 weeks of crazy rainfall that Flat Bridge (below, photographed by an unknown to me photographer during the dry season) will also be out, so we'll have to track down the road conditions before we leave.Jamaica is an interesting country indeed; it doesn't qualify for debt relief so the infrastructure is in appalling condition and the country is definitely suffering from all the flooding and landslides of the last few weeks but none of them are happening at one time so Jamaica doesn't qualify for emergency relief either. This is just the rainy season; every day life in Jamaica while it lasts.
