We weren't able to buy tomatoes at all or decent potatoes in the local supermarkets this past week or two and our fridge was becoming a bit bare demanding a trip to Coronation Market. It was a case of either clean and defrost it or fill it up with fresh fruits and vegetables so I invited some of the new volunteers to join us on a Saturday morning trip to the market. Besides, we hadn't been there since the state of emergency last May so we were overdue.Everything seemed the same with the exception there was a visible presence of police patrolling in cars and standing in groups on many corners. The waiter at Moby Dick's, an excellent restaurant downtown where we stopped for some fresh juice before returning home, confirmed it was safe for whiteys to visit anywhere in the downtown area now. He knew where all the police were, both uniformed and plain clothed. That was comforting. This man asked me to take his photo...he was holding a very sharp knife (see below) so I went along with it plus he didn't want any money so it was all good. And once again, the man below asked for his picture to be taken. I checked if he was looking for money and he said no, but if I wanted I could buy something off his cart. I bought an orange broom. Later he asked me for a copy of the photo and gave me his name and phone number so I can find him again. He has to stay mobile because the police are cracking down on the illegal vendors which means every once in awhile they all have to pick up their stuff and vanish quickly. But in fact they just set up around the corner when this happens. To see our first visit to Coronation Market pre-state of emergency:http://mwapoleni-bunty.blogspot.com/2010/04/best-morning-ever.html
