We borrowed some laptops from RESAEC, a local NGO, to teach some basic IT skills to the teachers and students in Maga. IT is on the primary school curriculum and students are examined on it at the end of primary school, but none of my schools have electricity, let alone computers. Of the seventeen teachers I trained last week, only one had ever touched a computer before. Almost all of the students had never even seen one. When we showed one class the little black box we'd brought to their school we asked them to guess what it was. "A giant magnet?" "A box?" they suggested. When we opened it up to reveal the screen and keys they burst into spontaneous applause. When we left they were discussing how many sacks of rice they'd have to collect to swap for a computer. Learning IT in my kitchenNo roof, but they have a computer!
