 In the undergrowth, by dappled lightpatiently, persistentlymy reptilian guard lies waiting.A stem hugging, leaf clinging sentryanticipating a morning snack of passing insect. With the rising sun warming his bloodencouraging circulation, inspiring elongationmy camouflaged guardian slowly stretchesone graceful limb by one graceful limbinto a lumbering swaggerout onto the corner of the house wall. And there he staysstanding guard by my kitchen doorwaiting my lunchtime return. In cobra posethis sun worshiper stares skyward.His bearded flaps unfurledcatch rays bounced back off the concretecatalysing lifepumping his heart, pushing his bloodensuring the day’s work and the night’s survival. Erect and proudhis head high atop his long backthe commander of all his dominionsurveys his worldhis eyes watching me as I walk along the passageway.My own private figureheadin defiant ascendancythis astral reincarnation of a dragon by my door.Statuesque, dignified, poiseda soldierarmed and ready to pounce.© Sheila Ash, 23rdFebruary 2015ashramblings
