Carrying on our theme at our Creative Writing Group of looking at emotions, this weeks we tackled betrayal. Here’s my piece. The wilderness of concrete blocksOvergrown with grass and mossInterspersed with remnant towersIndustrialised relics rusting down. The corners, bare of buildings, standDesolate, deprived and sadThe only occupants of lateThe hookers, dealers and the mad.Lost generations, generating hateLives lost in an external waitFor betterment that never comesFor promises broken one by one.Disappointment and dismay ingrainedDespondency ascends and reignsDemoralised by povertyTheir only hope the lottery–That dream of a chance to replaceThis bleak and dreary wasted placeOf grey skinned gloom and leaden heartsOnce happy families torn apartLet down by unions, banks and bossesSuffering long and hard the lossesOf jobs, self-respect and prideThey grasp the last hope plebiscite.Attentive to their inner voicesThey put a cross aside their choicesAnd giving up their final prayersVoted out those dammed betrayers.© Sheila Ash 6thJuly 2016SeeWhy we voted leave: voices from northern EnglandfromGuerrera FilmsonVimeo.ashramblings
