On every 1950s high street you could see themSpruced up, suited and bootedSickly smile in placeChat up lines at the readyto encourage weary faces to“smile for the birdie”.Box brownie in one handFlash gun in the otherGrabbing unsuspecting passers-byDay trippers with their ice cream cones,Factory girls on their lunch breakShoppers for the New LookPassing out their business cards“Just come and see,No obligation,Your own photograph”Most of these now long lostCast aside in boxesConsigned to atticsCovered in cobwebsNibbled at by miceRotted by dampDiscarded ancestry.These faded black and whitesAre found generations laterBy new occupantsConverting attics for future childrenFor whom their faces, their streets, their clothing hold no familiarityin a world where Instagram has replaced Kodachrome© Sheila Ash 2ndOctober 2016ashramblings
