Today it’s international World AIDS Day and to celebrate this global event, my organisation, Dzithandizeni Nutrition Group went out into the village to deliver its outreach programme at Molozi Basic School, which involved dancing, cooking and delivering HIV/AIDS education programmes! It was a great way of reaching the rural community, who often are unable to make the large events in town as the community members are often working hard in the fields planting maize. After talking to members of the community, it was felt that there should be more programmes like today, where rural people are included and are informed about the issues of HIV and nutrition, as there is evidence to show that rural communities have less access to information than their urban counterparts. It was great to be part of the commemorations in the rural areas and not just in town. It was also clear by comments made by some of the villagers that programmes like Dzithandizeni’s are badly needed in the rural communities as there is still a lot of stigma associated with people living with HIV. I was therefore glad that we were able to visit the community of Molozi school and I even got the chance to take part in traditional dancing!
